Definition. A loan offered to students which is used to pay off education-related expenses, such as college tuition, room and board at the university, or textbooks. Many of these loans are offered to students at a lower interest rate, such as the Perkins loan or Stafford loan.

To apply for a federal student loan, you must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Based on the results of your FAFSA, your college or career school will send you a financial aid offer, which may include federal student loans.
What are student debts?
Student debt is a form of debt that is owed by an attending, withdrawn or graduated student to a lending institution. The lending is often of a student loan, but debts may be owed to the school if the student has dropped classes and withdrawn from the school.
How does a student loan work?
Student loans may be a necessary evil, but there is plenty you can do to minimize the damage:
- Only borrow as much as you need (yes, you can take a smaller loan than the one offered to you).
- For federal loans, make sure you're on the right payment plan.
- Pay on time, every month.
- Pay extra as often as you can.
How do I get a loan for school?
To get a student loan as part of a government program, visit your school's financial aid office. Let them know that you'd like to borrow, and they'll tell you what steps to take. You'll have to fill out a FAFSA form, which will determine what type of aid you're eligible for.
